Second to feature in our #AdaptToSucceed campaign is Director of Architecture For London, Ben Ridley. Specialising in bespoke homes and residential developments, Ben's acclaimed young practice has seen him win several awards. As a close friend of the brand, we met up with Ben at his Clerkenwell office to discuss his current projects and successes.
What motivates you to succeed?
I love to design and feel priveledged to be able to improve the quality of our built environment. I'm motivated to create joyful buildings and spaces that delight and the continued success of my practice allows us to do this.
What are the biggest challenges you're facing?
Learning to lead a growing practice has been challenging but interesting. I also now spend more of my time pitching for new work than drawing in CAD, so I've had to learn new skills quickly!
How have you adapted to succeed?
Consistently adapting to new technologies has been very beneficial for the practice's development, especially winning work using the Internet and social media. I've learned that you can't always do everything, and knowing when to delegate is key to succeeding.
"Keep reading, keep being inspired by others and keep asking questions."
How much further do you have/want to go?
I'd like to continue to grow and develop the practice so that we can work on a range of types and scales of project. We'd especially like to start doing more cultural and public space works.
What piece of advice would you give to a young architect starting off?
Remember that as an architect you are always learning and adapting. If you don't know enough about something, use your initiative and take the time to find out more. Keep reading, keep being inspired by others and keep asking questions.
Describe your personal style.
I like to wear muted tones and simple patterns, usually contrasted with some bright socks! I'm a fan of good leather brogues because they work with anything.
